Tourism in Europe at record levels - ITB Trend Report
The ITB recently published their World Travel Trends report with travel figures of 2014 and a forecast for 2015. The report focus' on travel figures of European travelers who - at this point - are still facing an economic crisis and have to deal with the political unrest in the Ukraine. Despite that all, Europeans remain travel hungry and are traveling further and more often than ever before.
Best travel year yet
2014 will go in the books as the year with the most trips taken thusfar as the number of foreign trips rose by three per cent. The most popular destinations were: Greece, Spain and the UK. The average length of a trip decreased yet the spending per overnight grew by four per cent.
City break segment by far the most popular
During the first eight months of 2014, the number of holidays taken by Europeans grew with five per cent of which the city break segment was the most popular, resulting in an increase of 10 percent compared to last year. Travelers stay away from the countryside and snow and seek their leisure escapes in the major cities. Another trend that occured in 2014 is MICE travel. This segment grew by four per cent whereas 'traditional' business trips declined due to budget constraints. A downturn of three per cent.
Europeans travel further than ever before
Trips taken in Europe remains by far the largest market (+three per cent) yet long-distance traveling was even more popular among Europeans. Outbound numbers to Asia saw a growth of seven per cent, North America and the Caribbean + six percent and South America and the Pacific also registered a growth of five per cent. For 2015, travel figures are expected to increase by three per cent.
Inbound tourism grew by 4.2 percent
The trend report showed that the number of tourist arrivals in the first eight months of 2014 rose to 413 million, meaning an increase of 4.2 per cent. This accounts for both Southern and Northern Europe with Greece, Spain, Turkey, Germany and the UK as most popular destinations.
