Nearly 90 million international city trips taken to European cities
According to a recent study by Mastercard, London was the most popular city break destination worldwide in 2014. With an estimated 18.69 million international visitors, the British city tops the list of international city trips taken last year and registered a growth of 8%. The complete Top 20 of international city trips (overnight) in 2014 can be seen in the chart below.
Top cities in Europe are 2. Paris, 3. Istanbul, 4. Barcelona and 5. Amsterdam. Together with London, these cities received an estimated 60.46 million international visitors last year.
Mastercard has also looked more closely at the most popular city trip destinations in Europe. The continent’s Top 10 has attracted an estimate of 89.95 million visitors in 2014 of which all cities – with the exception of Milan – have seen an increase in terms of visitors. On average the top 10 saw an increase of 5,7% with Istanbul absolutely topping the list. This city has seen an increase of 17.5% in terms of international visitors. Milan registered a decline of 0.4%.
