Holiday figures the Netherlands 2014
Annual reseach bij NBTC-NIPO indicates that for the first time since 2000 the holiday participation in The Netherlands has fallen below 80 per cent (79,5%). In 2014 12.5 million Dutch took one or more holidays both domestic as well as international, resulting in over 35 million holidays. The decline is mainly due to the ongoing economic instability.
Despite the decline in participation, the report also indicates that the number of trips taken per person per year has increased. On average Dutch holidaytakers go on a trip 2.8 times per year. People tend to travel shorter but more often. The number of short holidays (7 days or less) has increased with 2 per cent to 19.3 million. The number of longer holidays has declined with 5% to 15.8 million.
The majority of the holidays accounts for international holidays (17.9 million) for which Germany is the most popular destination with 3.4 million holidays taken by the Dutch. This number has increased with 6 per cent while France (second in place) noticed a decline of 3 per cent. Noteworthy is the continuing increase in visitor numbers for Greece. The Mediterranean destination saw a growth of 150.000 holidays. The overall spending on holidays has remained stable with €15.4 billion spent in 2014.
