2013: Decline in Dutch holidays - Christmas is a popular travel period
Research by the Dutch ‘ContinuVakantieOnderzoek’ (CVO) shows that the economic crisis caused a decrease to roughly 36 million holidays taken during the past year. Most of this decline can be found in short holidays (2-7 days) as this dropped 6%.
Germany and France most visited destinations
The number one destination for Dutch holiday takers remains Germany, as 3.2 million holidays were spent here. France is the second most popular destination and received approximately 2.7 million Dutch holiday takers in 2013. Other destinations that conclude the top-5 are: Belgium, Spain and Austria.
Christmas is a popular period for travel
Despite the decline in holidays taken, the two weeks of Christmas holiday in The Netherlands, is still a popular period to travel. It appears that the week before Christmas is becoming slightly more popular and a rough estimate of 900.000 people will travel abroad during this year’s Christmas holiday.
