King’s Day – The day Holland goes Loco!
One of the best days to be in Holland is on ‘King’s Day’ – formerly known as Queen’s Day’. On April 30 2013 the eyes of the world were focussed on our little country as our former Queen Beatrix abdicated from the throne. Traditionally April 30 is the day on which the nation goes Orange – our national colour - and we celebrate Queen’s Day. This year will mark the first ever King’s Day since the start of this festive day in 1890.
Traditional ways
As of April 30 2013 The Netherlands has a King, Willem Alexander and therefore Queen’s Day has changed into King’s Day. In many ways the Dutch are very progressive but when it comes to our national holiday we like to keep things traditional. Flee markets, free concerts throughout the country and the King that will visit 2 places in the country where he will be presented a range of traditional Dutch games. Most of the family joins as they make their way through the streets where they are cheered on by the crowd and the entire country is throwing a big party with Amsterdam of course being the place to be!
Festivities
Dressed up in orange, orange drinks, orange food, orange decorations… it is orange that marks this day and no matter young or old, the majority of the population celebrates this fest. This year the king will visit the villages of Amstelveen and De Rijp, located in the Amsterdam area. This year King’s Day will be held on April 26 but the new official date for King’s Day will be April 27, the birthday of our King. Each year over 800.000 people visit Amsterdam on this colourful day.
