Expected decline in Dutch 2014 summer holidays
Some 10,5 million Dutch will go on a summer holiday this year, a decline of 0,5 percent in comparison to the same period last year. Out of this number 7,5 million will spend their holiday abroad (-2%) and 2,5 million will stay in Holland. These figures were released by Dutch holiday market research company NBTC NIPO. An estimated 500.000 have still not decided yet whether they will stay in Holland or go abroad.
This will be an increase of 2%. The weather is an important influencer in whether those last-minute holidays will be spent in Holland or abroad.
Most popular destinations abroad
About 150.000 less Dutch will go abroad for their summer holiday this year which is a decrease of 2%. For the Dutch the two most popular holiday destinations are France and Spain. Almost 1.3 million Dutch will go to France this year and 800.000 will go to Spain. Greece is gaining in popularity taking the 5th position with 150.000 more visits than last year. Also, intercontinental destinations are going to be more and more popular, this year there will be an increase of 100.000!
Most popular destinations in Holland
Interior holidays: 250.000 Dutch will spend their break in Holland with 75.000 more Dutch going on a camping trip in their in own country. The most popular destinations in Holland are the province of Gelderland (325.000), Limburg and Zeeland (both circa 275.000)
The number of Dutch still not knowing at this stage where they will go to has risen from 400.000 last year to 500.000 now; 30% of the holidaymakers still need to book their trip and 15% will go on the spur of the moment.
