City trip by far the most popular holiday segment in Europe
Having organised several successful European City Breaks Press Events it's no surprise to us at Baltus Communications that city trips are booming. Not only for Dutch travelers, but Europeans in general. ITB Berlin has commisoned IPK International to research the holiday trends among all Europeans from 2007-2014. Just in 2014 there have been nearly 70 million city trips, a growth of 60 percent compared to the first monitoring in 2007.
Research has shown that no other holiday segment is as popular as the (international) city trip segment. The most popular country in terms of city trips is Germany, which received nearly 10 million visitors in 2014. The top 3 of city trip destinations is as followed: London, Paris and Berlin, followed by Barcelona, Prague, Amsterdam, Vienna, Rome, Munich and New York.
Previously the summer months proved to be the most popular time for city tripping, however this has shifted during the past couple of years. In 2014, 52 percent of all city trips took place during the summer months compared to 49 percent during the rest of the year. Peaks were noticed in August, May, April and December.
In general we take shorter holidays which has led to the increased popularity of the city trip. The share of short trips (1-3 days) now takes up 40 percent of the total travels. Which may come as less of a surprise is the fact that tourists more often book their accommodation through the private sector such as an appartment booked through Airbnb or HomeAway. Despite this trend, two thirds of all city trippers still book with a hotel. The spending pattern seems to be relative high as four fith of all city trippers are of high social classes, are higher educated and have a higher income. In 2014 the average city tripper spent €700 per trip, equaling to €130 per day, all inclusive.
